Apart from the usual crime prevention methods adopted by the Tamil Nadu Police such as Vigilance welfare cell, Village Vigilance Committees and self-help groups, several non-conventional methods of crime prevention have been experimented with great success.
Some Non-Conventional Crime Prevention measures are:
Beat Boxes
The Beat Officers' System was introduced in Trichy City in 1999 with the objective of friendly policing through personalized attention. 57 Beat Boxes are functioning within 60 wards in Trichy Corporation. Beats' jurisdiction has been defined considering Crime Sensitivity and public needs. Each Police Station has 4 to 5 Beats. Every Beat box is manned by four Police Personnel.
Beat Officers who know their area well find it easy to identify a stranger thus preventing Crimes and any other subversive activities. The Beat officers are equipped with walkie - talkies.
During Peak hours, the Beat Officer regulates the crowd at bus stop, children near schools, women's colleges, on pay day at banks and market, on festival days at places of worship, during new releases at Cinema theatres etc

Online Vehicle Check System
| This is a Computerised online system which provides Vehicle's details and also the owner's address. It is mainly used for the Traffic Police Personnel while apprehending traffic violators. Link is available with R.T.O., to check on stolen / missing vehicles and information on involvement of licensee in traffic / accident offences before issuing renewal of Driving license. This system is effectively functioning at Chennai City and Madurai City.

Slum Adoption Programme
Trichy City Police have embarked upon a novel scheme of adopting slums, with the twin objective of preventing the breeding of criminals and rehabilitating the ones, who have fallen victims to circumstances. 12 slums - One in each Police Station of the City have been adopted by the police also encourage the villagers to take up Self- Help Welfare activities.

Yellow Brigades /Blue Brigades / Patrol Vehicles In Chennai City
| In Greater Chennai City, additionally Yellow Brigades, Blue Brigades and Patrol Vehicles have been introduced. Each Yellow Brigade covers an approximate distance of 2 Square Kms. during day time, from 06.00hrs to 21.00hrs. Whereas Blue Brigade covers the same distance of 2 Square Kms. during night from 23.00hrs to 06.30hrs. Each patrol vehicle covers an approximate distance of 3.2 Square Kms. throughout day and night.

For the patrolling requirements of Yellow Brigades and Blue Brigades, Motor Cycles have been provided equipped with patrolling gadgets such as Sirens, Revolving Lights, Public Address System, Wireless Communication System, etc. For Patrol duty, 40 Jeeps have been provided equipped with Police Siren, Revolving Lights, Public Address System, Fire Extinguisher, Top Search Light, Police Display Light and Wireless Communication System. The response time to control room calls has been brought down to 3-4 minutes.
Since the launching of Yellow Brigades and Blue Brigades from 28.08.2002, the crime rate in the Greater Chennai City has come down considerably.
