Police Recruit Schools
There are four permanent Police Recruit Schools in Tamil Nadu - Vellore, Coimbatore, Perurani (TTN) and Tirucchirapalli. The oldest recruit school is in Vellore, which started functioning as a temporary training school in 1896. This was followed by Coimbatore (1912). The latest police recruit school has been opened in Tirucchirapalli in 2008. These schools are meant to train police constables, who are the grassroots of the police service.
The Police Constables are recruited through Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board. The selected recruits are given comprehensive training at these Police Recruit Schools both in out-door and in-door subjects, including Computer operations and automobile driving. Team work, especially sports activities and cultural programmes are particularly encouraged.
Each Police Recruit School is headed by a Principal, who is in the rank of Additional Superintendent of Police, assisted by Vice-principal, in the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police. The support staff consists of Law Instructors, in the rank of Inspector of Police, Asst. Law Instructors in the rank of Sub-Inspectors of Police, Chief Drill Instructor (outdoor), in the rank of Inspector of Police, assisted by Reserve Sub-Inspectors of Police and Asst. Drill Instructors in the rank of Head-Constables.
The Superintendent of Police of the concerned District heads Temporary Police Recruit Schools, which are opened at various district headquarters, when a large number of constables need to be trained.
